FDA: shortage and copy-rule update ↗Read the words around a made-to-order offer
Compounded means the medicine is mixed or made to order to meet a patient's need.
A generic drug copies a brand medicine and has FDA approval. A medicine made to order has no FDA approval.
As of September 2026, no copy of semaglutide or tirzepatide has approval to be sold in the United States.
FDA says calling a medicine made to order an approved copy, or claiming it has been proved to give the same result, is misleading.
