A guide to finding and understanding care

Weight-related offers

# Read past the weight-loss headline.

The situation

A weight-loss offer gives an ingredient name and a low starting price. You still need the finished product and the reason for treatment.

Separate the ingredient, the brand, the form, such as a shot or pill, and the health problem being discussed.

- Drug name

- Product and form

- Reason prescribed

An ingredient name leaves questions about the finished medicine.

FDA is the federal drug agency: the Food and Drug Administration.

From the record

### What the named injections treat

Ozempic and Wegovy injections contain semaglutide; Mounjaro and Zepbound injections contain tirzepatide. As of September 2026, Ozempic and Mounjaro injections have approval for managing blood sugar in type 2 diabetes. Wegovy and Zepbound injections have approval for losing weight and maintaining that loss. The products also have other approved uses, so ask which use fits your health problem.

Record checked in September 2026.

## Ask which use fits the discussion

For weight care, the approved injection brands are Wegovy for semaglutide and Zepbound for tirzepatide, as of September 2026.

Ask the person treating you to explain the product's approved use and why it is being discussed for your health.

### Check the national shortage record

FDA's national drug-shortage list included neither semaglutide injections nor tirzepatide as of September 2026.

If a service says a shortage allows it to make a copy, ask it to show the current national FDA listing.

Record checked in September 2026.

## Read the words around a made-to-order offer

Compounded means the medicine is mixed or made to order to meet a patient's need.

A generic drug copies a brand medicine and has FDA approval. A medicine made to order has no FDA approval.

As of September 2026, no copy of semaglutide or tirzepatide has approval to be sold in the United States.

FDA says calling a medicine made to order an approved copy, or claiming it has been proved to give the same result, is misleading.

### Research-stage names are a separate issue

FDA says that, as of September 2026, federal law forbids compounding with retatrutide or cagrilintide; neither ingredient is part of an approved drug.

Record checked in September 2026.
