A guide to finding and understanding care

Georgia care rules

Your location sets the rules.

The situation

An online service says it serves people across the country. Your visit would take place while you are in Georgia.

Ask which Georgia license and prescribing rules apply to the person treating you.

  1. Where you are
  2. Who would treat you
  3. Which record to check
Start with your location during the visit.

From the record

An out-of-state office does not settle the license question

As of September 2026, a doctor in another state generally needs a Georgia medical or telemedicine license when treating someone located in Georgia.

Record checked in September 2026.

Georgia: doctor license routes

Remote care has a license category

A Georgia telemedicine license is a special license for online care; it does not permit routine in-person practice in Georgia, as of September 2026.

A nurse's license and prescribing agreement are different checks

A nurse practitioner has advanced nursing training and may assess patients and prescribe as state rules allow.

As of September 2026, a Georgia nurse practitioner's permission to write prescriptions depends on a written doctor agreement submitted to the medical board.

Ask for the nurse's license details and the doctor named in that agreement.

From the record

Ask about an exam before a first prescription

In January 2024, Georgia's medical board said an exam in person is generally needed before a first prescription. The rules reviewed in September 2026 also have exceptions.

Ask the person who would prescribe: Do I need an exam in person before this prescription?

Record checked in September 2026.

What the exceptions mean for a first visit

Georgia's online-care rule allows care after the treating person has already examined you in person.

It also allows care requested by a Georgia doctor, nurse practitioner or physician assistant who has examined you.

Another route uses technology that lets the treating person examine you at least as well as a visit in person.

The separate prescribing rule has an exception for some prescription-only medicines when a valid doctor-patient relationship exists under Georgia's telehealth law.

These details are missing from the board's short summary, which came before the prescribing rule changed in August 2024.

The recorded sources do not settle whether a first video visit alone can support your exact prescription.

Ask the person who would prescribe: Which exception applies to me, and how will this visit meet it?
